HOW TO NAIL AN EDGY PARTY LOOK

When I think of Christmas party looks it’s inevitable to visualise sequins, satins, cheesy Christmas jumpers and glitters. All of those things are pretty, but never have been my thing. I grew up climbing trees and hanging out with my big brother’s mates and although I cannot live without all things fashion and beauty, there always needs to be that edge element to all my looks – especially Christmas party looks. If you can relate, then you’re in the right place and if you can’t – you’ve gotta read on anyway 😉

SWAP SEQUINS FOR METALLICS

Sequins are gorgeous to look at in the candle light and when you’re out in a bar, but lets admit they are a real pain to wear. Not only do half of the sequins fall off when you take them off, but they’re so itchy to wear. Super uncomfortable and a real  nightmare to wash. Lets just say that the days of “no pain no gain” days for me are over and I prefer to go for metallics instead! Pleated or plisse metallics add that needed touch of shimmer and sparkle and effortlessly play with the festive lighting. How about a stretchy super comfy metallic tee?

SWAP DRESSES AND SKIRTS FOR LEATHER / COATED SKINNIES

Last thing you want is freezing yourself to death in the “minus four” evenings during the party season. As you already know from this post, tights are not my BFF’s so I prefer to opt for leather or my new favourite – coated skinnies. My first ever pair of coated skinnies are from Long Tall Sally and I must admit I absolutely love them. The texture is perfect, not too shiny and super stretchy which means no need to worry about unbuttoning the top button after dinner. The extra coating gives you more heat and when I don’t wear these you’ll see me in my leather skinnies.

GIRLY BUT EDGY ACCESSORIES

I mean you can totally cover yourself in studs and spikes if you like, but since my look is already “edgy” enough I like to add a few girly cute accessories to balance it all out. But not any cute girly pink fluffy and sparkly things… I think Henri Bendel knew my type of girl when they designed their new Christmas collection. Leather floral crossbody and heavy metal floral jewellery – oh yeah… Can’t wait to see what else they have launching in their new collection on the 28th of November!

WEAR OUTERWEAR THAT’S ACTUALLY WARM

There’s nothing worse than having to wear cardigans over your party looks before you slip your coat on. The chills from that freezing lining are like icicles if you don’t wear a cardigan or some sort of knit underneath. Say hello to this Shearling Aviator that is lined with sheepskin and keeps you cosy and warm with just a t-shirt underneath. It’s also from Long Tall Sally and must admit my favourite jacket this season. And because it’s made for tall girls with lovely long arms, the sleeves are super long and the fit is PERFECT. Acne – move over!

HAIR UP – OR DOWN?

I got my hair coloured a couple of weeks ago at the one and only Sassoon Salon in Edinburgh by the best in the business creative director Fraser, but since it’s Christmas – we wanted to see how all those beautiful new tones would come through in an “up do” for a party look. Gareth, the lead stylist in the Edinburgh salon (who also trimmed my hair the last time) was up for creating something to suit my weird fashion-obsessed non-girly personality and as soon as he mentioned crimpers, the 14 year old high school girl jumped up for joy inside me. Messy braids, loose gelled style and a few other sleek up do’s  almost won me over, but crimpers… Without bringing back the 80s fully, only a section of my hair was crimped at the roots. This gives an instant volume and texture without having to backcomb the roots. Ideal! Of course there’s prep and technique to achieve this style, but I’ll let the boys explain all that to you. I’ll tell you more about my colour soon too…

So that’s it! Christmas Party look nailed. No dresses or skirts, scratchy sequins and jewelled princess hair involved! Nothing wrong with any of that, but call me an old bore – I like things to be stretchy, casual and comfortable.

PS don’t get surprised if you see more looks with that hairdo 😉 I stocked up on Dry Shampoo for a year!

Happy Partying people!
