Would you be able to describe your Mum’s perfume personality? Or are there scents that resonate most with your mother? I’m so excited to partner up with Boots this Mother’s Day who have tasked me to think about my mum and what scents best describe her – whether it is her signature perfume, or the memory of homey smells. There are so many. It’s such a beautiful project to be part of and I couldn’t wait to pick the most perfect perfume from Boots that encompasses a few of my mums (and mine) favourite notes.
I chose Hermes 24 Faubourgh Eau de Parfume at Boots for several reasons. The top notes are white flowers, vanilla and sandalwood. My mum adores flowers, white flowers, lilies and lilies of the Valley are her favourite, so it made think of her instantly. Although there’s no sign of Lily of the Valley in the perfume, which is my mum’s favourite wild flowers – there was something about the mix of vanilla, flowers and sandalwood that give all those warm fuzzy feelings about my mum.

Looking back at my childhood and remembering my mum’s cuddles and scent, the words that come to my mind to describe the feelings are warmth, comfort, sweetness, safety and love. But all extra delicious with a touch of her favourite perfumes she wore.
My mum was and still is a very hard-working woman, so there would be times when we didn’t see her all day as kids. My favourite thing to do was to put on one of her scarfs and wear it all day on my neck with her scent. There’s something about my mum’s scarfs that always retained the scents of her perfume and her for a long time. So even when I cuddled her as a kid coming back from work, the first thing I’d do is smell her scarf. Always so delicious and in a way – that cuddle and smell told an unspoken story about her day. No matter how hard her job may have been that day, the scarf and the cuddle told a positive and unconditionally loving story…
Other memories or words about mum and the things she loved / loves that come to mind are books, baking, walks in the woods… The woody notes make me think of the place I was born in, which was a beatiful estate with around 4 other houses in the middle of the woods. We had our very own little sauna, plenty of snow in the winter and plenty of firewood in the little log burner at home in the kitchen. There was always wood drying at home and we even used it for a stove back then, so I think you’ll see why the sandalwood notes bring up all those warm feelings. This perfume in a way reminds me of that time.

To relax, mum loved reading books and this too made me think of that woody note in the perfume. Baking though, was my mum’s favourite pass-time and so we both share the love for Vanilla in any from to this day. Perfume, cake – you name it. I think living in the woods, surrounded by wild flowers in the Spring and Summer, plus my mum’s delicious baking at weekends is the most beautiful dreamy combination. For a fragrance as well as a recipe for a perfect mother-and-daughter bonding. I’d always help her bake (often by licking the spoon and bowl) and just simply be there. Enjoying it. Taking it all in.
If I was to create a bespoke fragrance for my mum, it would contain all of those memories, special scents and notes from those little but meaningful moments. Hermes 24 Faubourgh is the perfect find though and it adds the right amount of sophistication, class and mystery. That’s my mum. A woman who’s had a hard life, brought up three kids, worked very hard and still maintained her “keep-it-all-together” personality. Maintained her class, the love of Nature and most of all unconditional love for us and now her grandchildren.
I love you Mum – you are truly the best!
Happy Mother’s Day! x
