PHILIPS LUMEA PRESTIGE
Being fuzz-free is every girl’s dream. It’s a real pain (literally – waxing!) and needs so much maintenance way too regularly if you ask me. There’s underarm hair, leg hair, bikini area, facial hair, arm hair… you name it. All to be “maintained” like an out-grown garden that never stops producing weeds. I personally don’t mind shaving my legs as they’re the easiest to “de-fuzz” for me, but it’s the underarm and bikini-line hair I wish I never had. Come on Mother Nature, don’t you know us girls have sleeveless tops and bikinis to wear sometimes? Complaints aside, I decided to look into other ways of hair reduction at home and after some serious research I came across PHILIPS LUMEA IPL for removal of hair on body, face and bikini. I’ve read reviews of many other bloggers and beauticians trialling the older model versions and couldn’t get my hands on my very own Lumea Prestige and so I did. I got in touch with PHILIPS as soon as I had enough information on the product and read enough reviews and I’m so delighted that the guys at PHILIPS were up for a collaboration together. Read on.
First, I’d like to point out that this Lumea Prestige is a form of IPL (Intensive Pulse Light) treatment and NOT laser hair removal as you would get in salons. IPL is less intensive and is safe to use at home. Laser is different so just wanted to make sure this was clear.
The device itself reminds me of a barcode scanner or a hairdryer. It’s super easy to hold and use and I love the fact that it’s cordless. It doesn’t need any parts replaced with time and charges fully in just a couple of hours. Lumea Prestige includes three attachments all for use on different body parts. One for legs and other larger areas, one for bikini area and the third smaller one (with extra filters) is for facial hair removal. All very straight-forward and very easy to replace.
I’d like to also note that this IPL treatment works best on light skin and dark hair, but you can always check PHILIPS manual HERE to see this product is suitable for you.
HOW IPL WORKS
With IPL technology, gentle pulses of light are applied to the skin and absorbed by the hair root. The darker the hair, the better the pulses of light are absorbed. The pulses of light stimulate the hair follicle to go into a resting phase. As a consequence, the hair sheds naturally and hair regrowth is prevented, but the treatment MUST be used regularly in order to maintain smooth hair-free skin. The IPL treatment is only effective during hair growth cycles and in order to make sure all the hair is treated, PHILIPS recommend doing an 8 week cycle (once a week treatment) with follow-up touch-ups. I’m just about to do my 5th treatment this weekend and will be following up with one treatment a month afterwards.
HOW TO USE LUMEA
The device itself is very easy to hold and use. The procedure is NOT painful whatsoever, but I guess it would depend on how sensitive you are to light flashes on your skin and what you define as pain, but if you usually wax then this will be a walk in the park. Trust me.
Before you use Lumea, it’s important to pretreat skin by removing hairs on the surface of the skin. This allows the light to be absorbed by the hair parts below the skin surface to ensure effective treatment. Shaving is fine for me as I feel waxing could be another cost and we’re trying to get away from pain here ladies.
There are 5 settings for different light intensities and their choice will depend on your skin type and hair colour. I usually use 4 as my skin is pretty white and my hair is dark and this setting is most effective on this kind of combination.
The device needs to be placed fully on the skin so that there are no gaps between the skin and the attachment rims. The green light will show (see image below) and this is the indication that it’s safe to proceed with the treatment – i.e. press the button the release the IPL. It takes around 20 minutes to do my legs, 5 minutes for my bikini area and around 2 minutes on each underarm. I count this as part of my “Me time” when nobody’s allowed to bother me and I can listen to my favourite podcasts while I’m at it. Win win!
I haven’t really had any side-effects other than some slight redness straight after the treatment which goes away almost immediately. Since I usually shaved right before each IPL treatment, I applied moisturiser all over the treated areas and it’s totally safe to do that. I also added a movie in bed as part of the after treatment and it’s been working wonders girls. You should try it!
OK OK lets talk about the results. Read below…
Although I’ve only had 4 treatments, I started to see a big difference after my second treatment – that’s 1 month after I got Lumea. The hair growth has definitely reduced as it now grows slower than before and hairs are a lot finer too. Best part for me is that I don’t need to grow my hair out for it like I do for waxing. Looking like a Chewbacca scared to take my jeans off is not fun. This aspect is fantastic as I can do both in my own time, at home working alongside my hair growth cycles and I’m hopeful that with time my hair removal with waxing and shaving will be reduced even further.
So far I’d say that my hair growth reduced by about 40-50% on my bikini area and underarms and to me that’s absolutely amazing. The effect that Lumea IPL treatments have had on my legs is even more impressive. I now only need to shave them once a week and in some areas, hair has stopped growing back altogether, but I’ve read it’s important to continue the treatments once a month as hair can grow back and may be even return it’s thickness too. As I say, IPL is not the same as permanent Laser hair removal, but is a great alternative for home use. I believe that by next Summer my skin will be smoother than ever and I’m even hopeful that I won’t need to wax or shave before and during holidays.
All in all I’m really happy with the product, the results have been amazing and I’m certain that with continued use I’ll even say goodbye to my razors one day.
This Lumea Prestige IPL device is definitely an investment as it’s not cheap, but it can last up to 5-6 years depending on how many flashes you use. I intend to continue using it as recommended once a month for the next 6 months or so on my legs, underarms and bikini area and will probably end up leaving out the legs as they were never really the “problem area” as much as bikini line and underarms.
If you’ve been thinking about IPL then PHILIPS Lumea is definitely the best in the market (trust me, I’ve done the research) and I also hope this post helped you answer some of the any questions you may have had about the treatments. Feel free to ask me anything on my experience with it and I’ll be sure to answer them. Email me if you’d rather not talk about fuzz problems publicly – don’t worry, I understand.
